first sweater

I’m celebrating my first knit sweater finish today! I started this project (Oatmeal Pullover designed by Jane Richmond) probably a year ago. It sat by my bedside for quite a while collecting beagle fur and dust. I finally picked it up a week or so ago and felt determined to finish it.

You see, I ran out of yarn after finishing almost one sleeve. Bummer. I know I made a ton of mistakes and probably not really knowing much, had bought the yarn a while before I actually started the sweater. I’m sure I didn’t even look at the overall yardage I needed. Ooops.

I make mistakes like it’s my full-time job.

If there’s a mistake to be made, I’ll make it. Not a bad thing, but I really really learn so much by making mistakes. So if you happen to look really carefully at this sweater you’ll notice I bought one skein way after the others in a totally different dye lot. I could have frogged the sweater, but I wanted to finish, to see if I could actually knit a sweater that I could actually wear.

I even learned how to pick up stitches without making things look all crazy. And I did the sewn bind off on the cuffs, so fun, definitely like sewing, but with really thick thread.  I think now I could probably make this sweater in maybe a weeks time if I kept at it.

I’ll post some of my notes on Ravelry (@noodleheadsews) today, just in case. Oh, and I’ll try blocking it too. Wish me luck!

Marian Cowl

I finished my first knitting project of the season – a Marian Cowl! I’m so happy it’s finished and not sitting in a yarn lump on one of my shelves.

Have you been knitting anything fun lately? I’d love to hear what you’re up to. Or maybe I should check out what’s going on Ravelry (find me @noodleheadsews)? I keep forgetting to do that.

This cowl was started sometime at the beginning of last year and I abandoned the project because I couldn’t figure out how to do the first twist part. I started again this year (thinking that I had a little more experience under my belt) and it happened again – couldn’t get the twist to happen. Well, third time was a charm and it worked awesome. Of course it doesn’t take much time at all to knit up using the extra bulky yarn, so I’m happy to have this one done!

mariancowl2It was supposed to be a Christmas present, but in my usual form, it’ll probably be gifted as soon as I see it’s recipient again. I just can’t wait that long! Plus it’s already freezing cold here, and dang, this one sure keeps a neck cozy.

My First Mittens!

You guys, I’m so excited!  I made mittens!  I’ve been busy scouring patterns and yarns and reading and re-reading instructions.  I finally found these Warmest Mittens pattern on Ravelry and just started!  They were awesome.  I had a great time making them.  Once I made one, I easily finished the second in a day or so.  I’m gearing up to make more, this time with a different yarn maybe.

I had gotten the Malabrigo from Eat. Sleep. Knit. as part of their free goodies program.  I love the color!  I think for next time I’ll pick a yarn with more ply to it?  I had finished these just in time for my mom to take them on her trip to Wyoming.  She said they were really great.  Warm and comfy.  They did come back a little worse for wear.  The pills!  Oh the pills!  I haven’t been knitting long enough to know that this happens and it’s okay (had to confirm it with Shannon).  Just need to get a little lint shaver and it’ll look better I hope.

Okay, well, I need to hop to it and figure out what pair of mittens I’ll be making for me!  yay!  Just in time before winter is over (hopefully!).
