New! Quarry Tote Pattern

Happy end of June! New! Quarry Tote Pattern! I’m excited to introduce you to my newest pattern, the Quarry Tote!

Here’s a quick list of the pattern’s features:

  • two sizes to sew!
  • bonus coordinating zippered pouch!
  • flat base
  • front exterior zippered pocket
  • interior mesh slip pocket (or opt for a fabric pocket)
  • optional adjustable crossbody strap
  • optional handles
  • optional recessed zipper or magnetic snap/Loxx/metal snap closure or no closure!

The Quarry Tote pattern is so FUN to sew!

  • The Small size is seriously SO adorable.
    • It’s small and mighty!
    • It also makes a cute crossbody bag, lunch bag, or a project bag for your craft stuff!
    • I think this one will be perfect for a toiletry bag, too!
  • The Regular size is going to be perfect when you need to carry a bit more! It’ll hold a sweater’s worth of yarn or makes a great everyday tote to hold all your things. I like how it stands up nicely.
  • The bonus Zippered Pouch is irresistibly cute! I can’t help but want to squish it! It’s made from the scraps of either size tote and opens up nice and wide with a sturdy flat base. It fits nicely inside either size Quarry Tote for all those smaller things you want to keep extra secure.

I hope you’ll love this new tote & pouch pattern as much as I do! I’ve been having so much FUN sewing up the samples. My main inspiration for this tote was my daughter who requested a small bag to take to a sleepover.

TODAY through Monday, JUNE 30th only (ends at 11:59 pm CST) purchase your PDF for 20% off! No code needed!

Construction Notes

The Quarry Tote features a flat circular base. I also love the cute front zippered pocket! It’s a fun method to build into your bag making skill set if you haven’t already! Plus, the pattern includes lots of options to customize yours, from handles, a crossbody strap, and closure options (recessed zipper, magnetic snap/Loxx, a metal snap, or my favorite is just an open top tote!). I envision the tote with the recessed zipper option being PERFECT for toiletries and travel items!

Here are my photo instructions for setting snaps as well as a bunch of shopping links!

Here is my photo instruction for installing a magnetic snap.

Fabric Notes

This pattern is perfect for all your precious canvas, dry oilskin, waxed twill, or vinyl! My absolute favorite combination of fabrics for this pattern (so far!) are dry oilskin for the exterior and waterproof canvas for the lining (think super lightweight and sporty!). I also really loved using the fun splashy canvas prints (I used a few of the Ruby Star Society canvases and adore them!) for the exterior and waterproof canvas for the lining.

Fabric and Interfacing Combinations

As with many bag projects, the cutting and interfacing take the most time! I would recommend breaking up your making sessions into two parts: one for cutting and interfacing and another for sewing! For this project I recommend a fusible woven interfacing (Pellon SF101 or equivalent).

If you’d like even more structure, add fusible fleece, add another layer of fusible woven, or try a medium weight fusible woven interfacing such as Emmaline Bags (EB Fuse – Medium) on the Main Panels, Top Panels, and exterior Base!

Zippers Used

Lastly, this pattern is written for fixed-length size handbag zippers OR zipper by the yard (many of which come in nylon finished that look like metal!). As always, be sure to read through all the supplies list and instructions before sewing! Make sure to note your zipper measurements depending if you’re using a fixed-length zipper OR zipper by the yard (they’re different because those zipper types are different and the construction methods are different)!

I have a bunch of colors of fixed-length handbag zippers in my shop in all lengths! If you’re going for the continuous zipper route, I’ve been using #5 zips on all of my samples.

Upcoming video sew-along and….

  • YES! I will be sharing a full video sew-along on my YouTube channel! I will post about it on my blog and social media when it’s available (hoping for the week of July 7th or so).
  • I am very excited to show you more samples! I’ll be diving into the details of each of the samples that I’ve made with in-depth blog posts – so be sure to stop by my blog in the coming weeks for those!
  • For those of you who prefer paper patterns, I’m hoping to have those ready in about a month. Thank you for your enthusiasm & patience!

I’m getting ready to make a couple of your zip top tote bags from your book. As I was decision making through my fabric choices etc. I was wondering when you would launch a new pattern. This made my day!

Love this. My question is if one were to use a waxed canvas for the exterior would it require interfacing?

    1. Rhiannon says:

I used waxed canvas for the exterior and didn’t need interfacing. Highly recommend!

        yayy! Love it!

    2. Anna Graham says:

With an 8-10 oz. weight waxed canvas, you could skip interfacing those pieces. 🙂

  7. Beth R says:

Anna: I’d like to make this bag, but find the recommended materials (canvas, dry oilskin) difficult to find, both online & retail, having no easy access now that JoAnn’s is gone. Perhaps you have some suggestions?

    1. Anna Graham says:

Hi Beth! Oh yes, for sure. I have lots of favorite shops. I think I’ll put together a blog post so I can get it organized a bit more. For now I recommend places like Hawthorne Threads, StyleMaker Fabrics, Sewtopia, Stitch Supply Co., Bolt Fabrics, Sullivan’s Trim, AL Frances Textiles, Charlotte’s Webbing, Emmaline Bags. Lots more, but hopefully that’ll help get you started.
