I’m happy to announce that I’ll be hosting the Sandhill Sling Sew-along starting next month! After having so much fun with the Pepin Tote Sew-along at the end of last year, I was excited to plan another! Connecting and getting to know folks was such a fun part – plus it’s fun! We all need a little fun these days!

Sandhill Sling Sew-Along Sign-up
I’ve put together a tentative schedule for the SAL and will run it the same way I did the Pepin Tote SAL, via a once-weekly email beginning Wednesday, February 17th (ending approximately March 17th). Each email will have written information as well as a video of that week’s steps. Click the link below to sign up to receive the sew-along newsletters:

Be sure to check out the #sandhillsling on Instagram to see so many amazing slings that have been made already! We can use the #sandhillslingalong as the sew-along #!
Schedule
I’m hoping to schedule the SAL for four weeks, plus a wrap up email at the end. Even if you don’t have time or aren’t sure you want to join in this time, you can sign up now and keep the emails for when you’re ready! It’s a casual thing, no pressure to keep up with any pace. The only requirement is that it’s FUN for you. Sewing is fun!

Supplies
In case you need bag-making supplies for the SAL I have most items available in my shop (I’m eagerly awaiting my restock of the Metal Snap Kits, but I don’t have an ETA yet):
- Sandhill Sling Pattern
- Webbing + Hardware kit (this kit is a combination of the 1.5 yards you’ll need if using webbing for the strap as well as the strap hardware).
- Sandhill Hardware Kit (hardware only if you only need the hardware)
- Webbing by-the-yard (instructions DO include making your own from fabric, too, so whatever works best for you!), you’ll need to order two yards for the sling, although you’ll only be using a yard and a half. If you plan on making two bags, order three (3) yards!
- Zipper Kit for View A (includes both zippers you need to sew this view)
- 18″ double pull zipper if you plan on making View B
- zipper pulls, totally optional, but fun! Leather pulls or waxed cord
If you’re making View B, I show a metal snap here (and it’s listed in the supplies requirements). Although I don’t have Starter kits at the moment, you could definitely substitute in a turn lock or a Loxx fastener. I have a video on how to install a turn lock (and you can check out the Loxx website for an install video. So, either of those options would work, too! Gotta love options!

If you have questions, feel free to ask them in the comments below!
Looking forward to seeing this pattern
I am so excited you are doing this! I bought the pattern and just spent the last couple of weeks re-doing my sewing room. So this will be the best first project in the newly redone space. Thank you!
Yayyy! That’s so exciting to have a newly finished creative space!!
Sign me up!
Thanks Mary! I fixed the sign up link now, hopefully you’re able to click it and sign up! π
Please register me in this sew along.
Thanks Cheryl! I fixed the sign up link now, hopefully you’ll be able to click it now and sign up. π
What a great idea! I bought the Pattern long time ago und also choose the fabric, now it will go! The sew along Pepin Tote was so great and my Pepin tote is every day on my side.
Oh my I only saw this today. This will be perfect. What is the start date? Do I have time to get a full kit shipped to the UK, including material?
Hi Karen, it’ll start February 17th, but like I mentioned in the post, feel free to sign up and sew along at your own pace. π I’d probably recommend shopping for supplies as close to home as you can because of COVID related shipping delays. Feel free to email us, hello@noodle-head.com and we can try and help find some shops that might be closer to you. Glad you’re excited!
Oh this is so exciting! I’m so happy that you are doing this sew along for the Sandhill Sling. I purchased the pattern and material some time ago, now I can take a break from quilting and have a little fun in creating this backpack. I clicked the link and entered my email-so I hope I’m signed up.
I’ve been eyeing this pattern since the day it was released! This is the perfect push I needed to finally make myself one, it’ll be perfect for hiking when the weather warms up.
Do you know of any shops that will be curating complete kits with fabric and all?
Hi Tori! yay! glad you’re excited. I’m not sure I know of any shops yet that would be doing a full kit, maybe Sewtopia?
Yayyyy, canβt wait! Itβs the perfect way to break up a long winter month!
Was looking for a project to do along with a friend, starting mid February. Literally thought I was dreaming when I saw your email/post this morning because had decided yesterday this was the project I wanted to do! SO excited! Your patterns are so well done, cannot wait! Signing up now!
Do you think your new Quarry Trail fabric is hefty enough for this project? Would you choose a heavier interfacing with it? Already made 1 using canvas, and it turned out perfectly! What a well-written, easy to follow pattern!!
Hi Karen, good question! So Essex (the base fabric that Quarry Trail is printed on) is 5.6 oz. per yard. It’s too lightweight on its own for the exterior of a bag. But, if you add interfacing (Pellon SF101) to it and then use a canvas weight for the lining that would work well, too. Another option would be to use two (2) layers of the SF101 on Quarry Trail, you may still want to add it to the lining pieces in that situation as well. Lots of possibilities! If you have more questions please feel free to email hello@noodle-head.com, too. π
So glad you’ve already enjoyed making one!! I love that! π
What type of needle do you recommend using for this project?
Hi Lindsey! I’ll be going over the supplies (and needles in week 1), but in short, I prefer a Schmetz size 14 Denim needle for this project. π
Hope I can still join. Got in a little late. Got pattern when it first came out.
Hi Kathleen, just sent you an email. π
I have recently purchased the Sandhill Sling. I would like to view the video. Is it still available?
Hi Denise! Just sent you an email. π
Hi Anna, did you send the link to week 3? I keep checking my email but canβt find it. Thanks.
Hi Maria, yes! The newsletter was sent out at 6:01 am yesterday (March 3rd). Try checking your spam/promotions folder just in case it ended up there.
I bought the pattern a few days ago. Can you still access the see along videos? Thank you
Hi Cindy,
Yes, if you click the link from the sew-along post (this post) the sign up is still active. Only caveat is that the next newsletter will go out on Mar. 10th (it’ll include links back to previous newsletters).
π
This is my first attempt at sewing a bag…The Sandhill. Wonderful pattern, precise instructions. Best tutorial and pattern ever. Thank you so much – just completed it today.
I have purchased the Sandhill Sling and I would like to view the video, Is it possible ? Thank you.
Hi Lydie,
I’ll send you an email. π
Can I still sign up to see the sew along
Hi Hillary, I’ll email you a link to view the sew-along emails. Thank you!
Would cork material work ok for this bag?
Hi Candy! I think I’ve seen a few made in cork. I’d say if you’re used to using cork you should do just fine! π
I bought the pattern but never got around to sewing it, is it possible to watch the sew alongs.
Hi Sheila, yep, here’s the sew-along post with all the links: https://blog.noodle-head.com/2021/04/sandhill-sling-complete-sew-along.html
