I’m very happy to say it’s a fairly quick and straightforward sew, which is always fun. I love making bags, but sometimes they can be so time consuming, right?! It’s great when I have the time and feel like really sinking into a project for a longer stretch, but there are definitely times I need something a bit on the quicker side. This particular bag came about because I actually needΒ a new bag. The turning seasons always makes me want to grab something new and different to use everyday, plus this time I seriously have worn out my last bag. I used my Gingham Tote, a pattern found in my book, for the past 18 months everyday. And you can tell! It gets tossed around so much, but I’ve loved using it.
But I’m ready for a bit of a change and I love the flat bottom and slightly slouchy casual style of this Compass Bag. Plus I feel like you can’t go wrong with hardware. It always takes things up a notch in my opinion. It comes in two fun sizes and you can pick from two styles of exterior pockets.
Here’s a little breakdown of some of the features if you’re curious:
- two sizes to sew!
- two exterior pockets, two views: cargo or slip style pockets
- interior slip pocket and zippered pocket
- magnetic closure and flat base
- adjustable crossbody strap or fixed length shoulder strap
I can’t wait to make more and explore some different possibilities! I think some quilting on the exterior could really be awesome. Plus, I pulled out so many fabric combinations that I could easily make a dozen more. I love that part the most!

This would be great in leather, and I think I will give it a try! I love the simple style and the beautiful hardware.
Another gorgeous Anna bag… congratulations! Love the shape and the flat bottom, the pockets and your fabric choices are dreamy
Love this new patternβ¦.can’t wait to try it . Looks like a fun “I have a few hours to sew” project!
I love the shape and the flat bottom. Did you design this to be soft and kind of slouchy? How do you think it would be in heavy canvas with some structure, as a knitting bag? Thanks for your thoughts. You have so many great bags to choose from. π
Hi Robyn,
Yes, the bag is a casual one with a bit of a slouch. For the recommend materials I do recommend using canvas weight fabric for the exterior fabric for this pattern (it also has interfacing which you can change up to suit your needs as well). The samples that I show are all sitting up on their own with just a few things inside, the denim gingham one is the stiffest fabric. So depending on what your needs are, it’s definitely up to you as to what fabrics and interfacings you choose. Hope that helps! π
Hey Anna! Awesome bag! I’m thinking about getting the pattern and making one for Sadie for Christmas but was wondering how hard you think it would be to add a recessed zipper. She likes her bags to have CLOSURE! LOL
Had some canvas left over from leaders for my quilting machine so dyed it and waxed it and made the smaller one… now making the larger one out of raspberry waxed canvas. Love this bag so easy to make
