You know I love a zippered pouch! They’re something so satisfying to make and fun and useful, too. I put together these pouches using a few bits of Rain Walk and some denim.
I love making small batches of things like this too, once you get into the flow, it’s fun to crank out a few. Plus it’s always more fun to take pictures of groups of things, oh the possibilities. This is just a simple pattern I put together (tutorial now available here!), a little bit of geometry involved in the body of the pouch itself to get the sides of the pouch straight (it’s not simple rectangles, but a pattern piece I drafted). The zipper is installed similarly to the Double Zip Wallet in my book.
These guys are lined with cotton canvas which adds nice structure without having to use a ton of interfacing. I did add SF101 to the exterior fabric, but other than that it’s really nice and durable feeling.

Beautiful!
Love! I just ordered your book. So excited to get it. I have made so many open wide bags and the divided basket and love them.
Love these.
I love using denim when I sew. It just goes with everything. Those are super cute and now I want to make some for my teacher friends.
the last pouch–in the grey ripple–is so elegant. love them all!
I love the fabric, it looks really nice:) Especially with the metal zipper! Have a nice day, Sophia

For such pouches….can u put a tutorial on this please….please
Love this DIY – such awesome little pencil cases!
Do you mind sharing what size of fabric you started with and how big the gusset is? Love these!
Hi! It’s actually a pattern piece I drafted (not a rectangle). 🙂
Man, those are cute! I can’t get enough of the Ripple Canvas. I’ve been sneaking it into my quilts alongside the cottons. It’s so pretty.
Love the pencil pouch pattern
I love these! What a great creative-friend gift….thank you!
HI Anna – These are adorable! You’ve got me all curious about how you’ve made them. I’m not sure what magic you’ve spun, but I can’t seem to duplicate it (tried – mine are more boxy and not nearly so elegant…)
So.. is this “secret recipe” pencil case pattern going to appear in an upcoming tutorial? (Pleeeeease!) Or as a mini PDF pattern? If so, I’m in 🙂 I’d love to make up a little batch of these for Christmas to go along with the Caravan Totes I’m making as gifts.
Would be happy to purchase the pattern as a PDF download… I’m not that great at fiddling things out for myself! Hope you do make a pattern as they’re a great size and shape. xo
What size zips did you use Anna?
Kindle edition PLEASE…
Actually thought I was commenting on the book. But I noticed Kylie requested a purchasable pdf. That would be great too!
Please, please. please do either a tutorial on these pencil cases or a pdf pattern. I want!!!!
Adding my voice to those who would love a pdf for these pencil cases. Please, please, please.
Thanks Jocelyn. Hoping to put something together for it this fall. 🙂
I’ve made enough of your open wide pouches that I’m sure I can do this, but I’d like some help with dimensions. Are they about 10″ X 3″ X 1.5″ ?
Hi,
This pencil pouch will actually be a free pattern coming up shortly. 🙂 It’s not quite the same as an open wide pouch because it uses pattern pieces to achieve the straight sides, but you could adapt it however you wish. 🙂
That’s great! I want to make a pencil case for my granddaughter who will be starting kindergarten soon.
This is great news. Was searching for a pencil case pattern for back to school, and stumbled upon your elegant pencil pouches. Looking forward to the tutorial.
I Love this pencil pouch pattern!!! What a great pouch. Please I would love a pdf for these pencil cases!!! I am in love with this Pouch. I am from Germany and i schow every Week this page….
Thank you very much and kind regards from Stuttgart
I have been eyeing these pencil cases off since you posted them. I should be able to work it out myself, but I somehow know that my method will not be as elegant as yours. I’ll keep checking back in hope.
But at the same time, Thank You for all the free things you post, open wide pouches are a staple in my house.
Did you post the tutorial in the fall? Have I missed it?
Hi Neeta! I get so excited every time I get a post on this thread, because I think maybe there’s been an update… but alas, no. No update yet! 🙂
I’m not sure I can figure out how to do this on my own. I would be more than happy to pay for a pattern. Thanks!
Hey there! I’m working on it! 🙂
Incredibly nice design. Absolutely love it! My daughter wants me to make one of these pouches using this nice sheep print http://www.mylinenfabric.com/home/7-sheep-linen-fabric.html I am super exited to start this project of my own.
Has the pattern for this been posted?
Yes! It’s available here: https://blog.noodle-head.com/2017/03/canvas-pencil-pouch-tutorial.html Thanks! I’ll add a link to this post as well. 🙂
I may make one of these to take with me to restaurants. Some places only offer plastic or cheap utensils, and drinking straws are being phased out. I will put two forks, two table knives, and two reusable straws in the pouch. I can wash everything when we return home.
