Road Trip Case for Knitting

Ever since I saw Anne’s post on flickr I wanted to make myself a knitting case using my Road Trip Case pattern. It was such a great modification and I really enjoyed making it!

I had a little pile of fabrics that I had set aside for another project, but it seemed like such a fun combination for this project instead. I added some leather details on this one. The closure is a scrap of leather and of course the zipper pull tab. I love how leather looks with just about any fabric. I think the closure leather will probably stretch over time, but that should be an easy fix by adjusting the button position.

As for the knitting needle pockets I’m pretty pleased with how they came out. I was going to try to be all precise and measure exactly what I had and go from there, but then I realized that it probably won’t matter in the end, everything will get moved around and used anyway. So I just eyeballed some of the needles I had and sewed dividing lines in each pocket.roadtrip4

I haven’t made something I knew for certain I was keeping for myself for so long. I love making things, but I realize I can only keep so much before things get out of control. So this’ll be a nice little organizer for keeping my knitting needles off the bedroom floor.

I never got this pattern thinking I just did not have a need. But seeing it worked up for knitting has changed my mind. Purchasing now and planning to make one this weekend. Love it.

  7. Anna, what a great pattern and fabric choices too.

  8. Great fabric choices! I love leather accents too

  9. Angela says:

Awesome. I am making this for my sister. It’s going to be a thousand times nicer than the organizer I made her when I first started sewing, haha. Isn’t it convenient that I already have the pattern?

  10. Laurel says:

This is fabulous! What a great idea for this case. Perfect fabric choices too…Leah Duncan + Sarah Watson are two of my absolute faves right now.

  11. I made two of your Road Trip Cases as Christmas gifts – one for a Rainbow Loom enthusiast and the other for a budding artist. Those two pre-teens were very pleased! Though I’m not a knitter, I love seeing this variation on your pattern. Just goes to show how versatile it is!

  12. Susan says:

Anna, how do you get the leather through the tiny hole in the zipper tab??

    1. Anna says:

Thanks for the question Susan! Metal zippers typically have a larger hole. I also cut my leather longer and cut one end at an angle so it’s easier to thread through. Hope that helps!

  13. Great modification. I’ll have to remeber this one.

  14. Franziska says:

That would be something for my friend. She knits and crochets and always thought she needs something to keep it all together.

  16. Whitney says:

Love this! Also love your Cathrineholm bowls. =0

  17. Perfect timing! Just this weekend I was thinking about needing a little pouch/holder for my knitting accessories. Now I have the perfect excuse to make myself a Road Trip Case! I might also need one for my DPN’s and interchangeable needles. 🙂

  18. Cat C says:

  21. Shannon says:

Love this! I’ve been meaning to make this pattern for so long. I love this version!

  22. mauri says:

oh boy I sooo could use one of those for all my random knitting needles that are shoved into a plastic tote right now. I’m loving the colors you chose, too. Perfect!

  23. Anne says:

yay! so glad you made this. i use mine all the time. for those interested in modifying this pattern, i’d recommend adding a flap that comes down over the full length of the needle side of the case to keep everything contained. occasionally, i’ll pick mine up upside down and everything will slide out!

thanks for the cred, anna! yours is beautiful.

  24. zalona says:

Very amazing post and inspiring blog! Keep up the great work, I’m a fan! 🙂 XO

  25. Elizabeth says:

This is perfect! I was just thinking I needed some solution for my knitting needles. This may be it!

  26. Randi Smith says:

I made my husband a road trip case for fishing tackle out of Cordura and waxed canvas with rigid mesh for the pockets. So many variations/options with this pattern!

  27. Brenda says:

Perfect for a sock knitter or to store an interchangeable needle set. I have never worked with fold-over elastic, but I’m wondering if you could use it to bind the pocket edges and if it would be tight enough to keep the needles from slipping out. The flap idea is a good one, but would you make a small flap for each row of pockets or a single flap for the whole case? I think it would be a little awkward to add a single flap. (?) I love your fabric choices, too. I’m in love with Cotton & Steel.

  28. Alamanda says:

I love it so much!. Thanks for the information ^^

  29. Mary Ann B says:

I was just at Vogue Knitting Live in NYC and while looking at the needle cases I was thinking I should just modify your road trip case! And here I come to see what you’ve been up to and there you go! Thanks for the confirmation and inspiration! I have two sets of ADDI’s (regular and lace tips) and need to figure out how to incorporate them also!

  30. Dana says:

  32. Stephanie says:

This is Exactly what I’ve been looking for. I have to get the pattern but as a more advanced beginner 😉
I am not sure how to do the modifications. Is this in the pattern? Wondering where I could get the instructions for modifying it for knitting needles! Thanks

    1. Anna Graham says:

The knitting pockets aren’t included as part of the pattern. If you’re still interesting in the pattern I can email you a brief set of measurements/instructions that you can use to modify the case. Let me know. 🙂

      1. Paula Maue says:

Could you email me your measurements from the modification? i bought the pattern and would like to make it for the knitting needles.

        1. Amanda says:

Hi Anna, do you still have the measurements for the knitting needle pockets for cutting and also for the stitch lines??? My email is: – thank you!

          1. Anna Graham says:

Hi Amanda! I do, will email them to you. 🙂

      2. Elica says:

          Will do Elica!

        2. Anna Graham says:

Actually, can you email me through my contact page? My email bounced back when I tried.

  33. Nancy Wright says:

I love your modifications! When you have a chance, could you please email me the mods too? Buying the pattern now. Thanks and Merry Christmases!

    1. Anna Graham says:

Thanks Nancy! I just sent you an email. 🙂

  34. ctschopp361 says:

I have a couple questions. One, instead of a button closure is it possible to put in a zipper? And two, would it be possible for you to email me the measurements as well for knitting needles? This would be perfect for my interchangeable needles. Thanks. My email is ctschopp361@yahoo.

    1. Anna Graham says:

hello! I’ve emailed you the info for the knitting mod. 🙂 As far as doing a zipper modification to the pocket, that would be doable but not something I could easily explain over email. It kind of depends what you’re looking for and how much time you’re willing to commit to making the modification. Hope that helps a bit. 🙂

  35. Jonina says:

oh my yes a must have I’d love to make one

  36. Hi Anna! Thank you for the wonderful pattern! I have long followed your blog and have loved your free tutorials. Could you please send me the modifications for the knitting pockets? I inherited a bunch of knitting needles from my late aunt-in-law and am in need of some serious organization!

  37. Christa says:

Hi Anna, are you still emailing the sewing modification notes? If so my email is I made a case for my daughter and she loves it. Planning on making on for my mom.

    1. Christa says:

      I meant the knitting modification.

    2. Anna Graham says:

Yes! Just emailed you the info. 🙂

I just discovered this modification you made for the case. I have the pattern and would love to do this for my sister. May I have the details e-nailed to me also? My email is Thank you!

Hi Angela! No problem, just emailed them to you. 🙂

  41. Cindy says:

Anna, I have been looking for a long time for a knitting needle case like this. Like others, I’d really appreciate the mods you. I assume you would do similar pockets for interchangeable needle set? Purchased the pattern but nervous about the reduced size. That said, REALLY excited to start playing with this. Found your adaptation on Pinterest (FYI)- can’t wait to see your next project!

    1. Anna Graham says:

Thanks Cindy! Just emailed you. 🙂

  42. Sarah Mead says:

Anna, I, too, would love the knitting modification for the Road Trip Case Pattern. I bought the pattern from you about when it came out – and when I just saw the adaption for knitting needles, I realized it will be perfect for a Christmas present for my picky sister.

Thanks Sarah! Just emailed you. 🙂

  45. Laura Van Der Merwe says:

I bought the pattern years ago to make this bag, and have never gotten around to it, but I see the modifications are separate, how do I get them?

This maybe a silly question but do the needles not fall out?

    1. Anna Graham says:

      Hi Laura,
I’ll email you the info. 🙂 And you definitely could add a flap that’s included as part of the pattern.

  46. DEBRA VINCI says:
